Where did the name of your business come from?
We consider ourselves a modern-day "urban market" in the sense that we showcase a continually changing wide-range of products with a distinctive style and feel. We've always strived to bring a bit of urban flavor to Durango while staying true to Durango's own unique style. Markets in the past used to function as central meeting places for a town or community, and we like to think that we also embody a sense of that as well -- a place to meet up with your friends for a fun outing together.
What is your business' mission?
We like to say that here at Urban Market "we sell happiness". We want shopping with us to be more than a product purchase; we want to get to know you and make you feel as though you're a friend as soon as you enter the door. When you get back to your home, we want you to remember the joy of shopping with us each time you look at that new purchase!
What do you enjoy most about running a small business in Durango?
Durango is such a supportive and dynamic community, and we love being a part of it. We love that our locals are so committed to shopping local and supporting us, and that we know so many on a first-name basis. We consider so many of our customers part of our extended Urban Market family, which we think is a testament to the welcoming nature of Durango itself!
What three words best describe you?
Fun, fresh, and friendly! We believe in creating a fun and friendly atmosphere within our store everyday, where you will always find fresh new products and ideas.
What sets you apart from other stores?
We feature a broad range of products that you won't find anywhere else in Durango -- from furniture to greeting cards, rugs and lighting to jewelry. We can truly be considered a one-stop local Durango shop, in the sense that you could come in looking for a birthday gift, and not only leave with that, but also leave with the perfect throw pillows, new dining room chairs, and a new cookbook -- all in one trip.
How do you support the community?
We give back regularly to local organizations and nonprofits, and regularly participate in local fundraising efforts. Each year we donate hundreds of gift baskets to organizations in Durango and the surrounding communities as silent auction prizes or fundraising giveaways. We stock a number of locally-made products and promote our local artists and makers throughout the store and on our social media. We're proud to be part of this community and help the organizations and people that keep it thriving!
