GET THE RUNDOWNLocated in the lush Animas River Valley, at an elevation of 6512 ft., Durango is rich in Western history. A thriving home for indigenous people, and beloved by the missionaries who made their way across the continent, as well as stalwart ranchers and farmers who made the Animas Valley their home, the town of Durango was officially founded in 1880 by the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. It continues to embrace its rich and diverse Western and Victorian Heritage - including the authentic coal-fired and now scenic railroad that draws an international audience.
