Downtown Balloon Glow in Durango, Colorado
Each October, downtown Durango lights up with the magic of the Downtown Balloon Glow. Hot air balloons line the 500 block of Main Avenue, glowing against the night sky as their burners ignite, creating a dazzling display of fire, fabric, and color. This family-friendly event is part of the Animas Valley Balloon Rally and has become one of Downtown Durango’s most anticipated fall traditions.
The Glow Experience
The action takes place in the 500 block of Main Avenue, right in front of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Depot, ON FRIDAY OCTOBER 17 AND SATURDAY OCTOBER 18
- Balloons begin inflating around 6:00 pm.
- The glow begins at 6:30 pm and lasts about an hour.
- Pilots will set up “candlesticks” — burners without balloons — giving spectators and kids a thrilling close-up view of the flames.
- The event happens on both Friday and Saturday nights in mid-October.
- Weather note: Balloon events are highly dependent on conditions. Wind or rain can delay, shorten, or cancel the glow for safety. Always check our social media channels for updates on the day of the event.

Final Thought
The Downtown Balloon Glow is more than a spectacle — it’s a celebration of Durango’s community spirit, shops, and dining scene. Because it’s weather-dependent, flexibility is key — but when conditions are right, the glowing balloons turn downtown Durango into a magical fall evening you won’t forget.
