Description:

We operate out of our original 1882 depot located at 479 Main Avenue and travel over 3,000 feet in elevation to the historic mining town of Silverton, CO. Durango was founded by the Denver & Rio Grande Railway in 1880. The railroad arrived in Durango on August 5, 1881 and construction on the line to Silverton began in the fall of the same year. By July of 1882, the tracks to Silverton were completed and the train began hauling both passengers and freight. Share the railroading experiences that generations of families have passed along through the years.

Visit our 12,000sf museum in our Durango yard to learn the history of Durango and the importance the train has had on the community since 1881. Take a Yard Tour to see the back shops that keep the train running. Shop our coffee shop for an expresso or latte and our gift stores for unique items that will remind you of your trip to Durango.

The D&SNGRR is history made up of original equipment, maintained to perfection, operated and kept up by people today using skills long lost to ordinary endeavors. On our railroad, you will experience Colorado at its best…wildlife, waterfalls, majestic peaks, all from the view of an 1880s train. You will see places you can get to only by foot or train. You will experience first-hand why the D&SNGRR was voted "Best Scenic Train" three years running 2021-2023, and voted “One of the World’s Top Ten Most Exciting Train Rides” by the Society of American Travel Writers in 2009. The most important part of our mission is you. It is to give you an experience you will never forget. Riding the D&SNGRR you are now a part of history. You are now an 1882 railroader. Welcome Aboard!
