Located in the North Main District, the Animas Museum (on the National List of Historic Places) is under the umbrella of the La Plata County Historical Society. Exhibits, interpretations and research library highlight the La Plata County area. The Animas Museum was once the Animas City School from 1904 to 1967. The Joy Cabin and Peterson House are also located on the campus offering tours of the 1870s pioneer life and 1930s. The main museum exhibits give overviews of the early Colorado Schools, Native Americans, Old West, fires, railroads, transportation and lifeways. Volunteers provide school tours of the Animas Museum, special events, history lectures, outreach programs, research projects, community involvement and collaborations, and collections management. Our website AnimasMuseum.org offers a variety of exhibits and programs online.
