Southwestern Colorado AHEC connects students to health careers, health professionals to communities, and communities to better health. We are a 501c3 nonprofit corporation and affiliated with the Colorado AHEC Program and the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Our mission is to improve quality and accessibility of health-related education and community and public health programming for students, professionals, and community members. SWCAHEC has a special emphasis on serving underserved populations and on promoting collaboration with existing health resources while filling gaps that affect the health of the community. We build local, regional, and state-wide network capacity and strengthen acedemic-community linkages in the eight counties we serve (Archuleta, Dolores, Hinsdale, La Plata, Montezuma, San Juan, San Miguel, and Ouray) in four core mission areas:
A few of our programs: Annual Health Careers Camp for middle and high school students; Nightingale Luminary Awards Banquet for Excellence in Nursing Practice; Internship program for undergraduate public health or nursing students; host housing for health professions students in the region for rural clinical rotations; and continuing education programs for health professionals.
