Durango Magazine readers include hotel guests, business travelers, Fort Lewis College parents, skiers, local business owners, Durango newcomers and La Plata County homeowners. The Buxton tourism survey from 2013 found the largest category of Durango's nearly one million visitors to be educated and married baby boomers (aged 51-plus) who frequently read print magazines and earn household incomes of more then $100,000 a year. They originate primarily from New Mexico, Colorado and Texas with additional large numbers visiting from Arizona and California.
With 35,000 copies distributed for Summer/Fall 2018 and 30,000 for Winter/Spring 2018-19 and a conservative estimate of five or more readers per copy, some 325,000 people see and read a magazine each year. Distribution is complimentary to guests of an estimated 3,000 rooms at participating Durango area lodging establishments. Approximately 20,000 copies a year are mailed to La Plata County businesses and homeowners, as well as subscribers around the country. Additional distribution includes paid delivery service to newcomers and paid distribution to certified racks in high-traffic venues around town including the train depot, chamber, airport, welcome center, airport, Purgatory Village and more. The Summer/Fall issue is distributed June through November. Advertising deadlines for Summer/Fall 2020 are March 19 for space; April 2 for materials. The Winter/Spring issue is distributed December through May. Deadlines for Winter/Spring 2020-21 are September 17 for space; October 1 for materials.
